Customer service calls, 911 emergency dispatch lines, trading-floor conversations, and the recorded calls retained by banks and insurers all have one thing in common. They are often sitting on magnetic tape, decaying with an expiration date attached to them that nobody wrote down. The clock is running out faster than most people realize; not because the tapes are old, but because of what’s actually happening to them, physically, right now.
Magnetic tape stores data by aligning magnetic particles suspended in a binder on a thin plastic backing. That binder — the glue holding the recording medium together — is the weak link for longevity. Most tape manufactured from the 1970s through the 1990s used a polyurethane-based binder that is chemically unstable over long timescales. Moisture in the air slowly reacts with the binder through a process called hydrolysis, breaking down the polymer and causing the tape to shed a gummy residue every time it’s played — a condition engineers call “sticky shed syndrome.” In more advanced cases, layers of tape fuse together on the reel entirely, a condition known as adhesion or delamination, where the oxide layer separates from the backing or individual wraps weld themselves to each other.
None of this requires flood, fire, or mishandling. It happens to tape stored properly, in climate-controlled rooms, sitting untouched on a shelf, or even stored at a records management facility like Iron Mountain. It’s a slow chemical clock built into the material itself, and once delamination sets in, every attempt to play the tape risks destroying it further.
Here’s the part that gets lost in the doom and gloom: the vast majority of tapes showing signs of decay are not lost causes. Sticky shed and early-stage adhesion can often be reversed with proper treatment, and even tapes with physical damage — snapped, warped, or partially fused — can frequently be stabilized, played back, and their contents moved to durable, cloud-based storage. The window is real, but it’s still open for most archives today. The risk isn’t that recovery is impossible; it’s that it gets harder, more expensive, and less certain every year the tape sits untouched.
Recovering the raw data from a decaying tape is only half the challenge. The harder problem for enterprise voice archives is that the recordings were often locked into proprietary formats by voice logging systems from manufacturers like NICE, Verint, Dictaphone, Racal, and Eyrete: many of them long out of business, with hardware and software that no one else knows how to read anymore.
